第一次考驗，發生在關羽兵敗向曹操投降后到白馬之戰前為止，為時只有短短的兩個月。這段期間曹操對關羽欣賞有加，并經常以厚禮籠絡，但關羽以種種行動証明自己不會因利益而忘卻與劉備結拜之情，表現了關羽對劉備的「忠」。
